Ductless Mini-Split Installation & Repair

Efficient heating and cooling for the rooms that need it — no ductwork required. Installed, repaired, and maintained across Northeast PA.

A ductless mini-split is a heat pump: an outdoor unit connected to one or more wall-mounted indoor units by a small line set that runs through the wall. Each indoor unit has its own controls, so you heat or cool only the rooms you're actually using.

Where mini-splits make the most sense

  • Homes heated by boilers. No ductwork means central air isn't practical — a mini-split adds AC, plus efficient heat, without tearing into walls and ceilings.
  • Additions, finished attics, and bonus rooms the main system never keeps comfortable.
  • Second-floor bedrooms that bake in the summer.
  • Garages, workshops, sunrooms, and in-law suites.
  • Replacing window units — quieter, more efficient, and you get your window back.
  • Offices and small commercial spaces that need their own temperature control.

Can a mini-split heat through a Pennsylvania winter?

Yes — with the right equipment. Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wayne Counties all sit in IECC climate zone 5A, with regular stretches in the single digits. Standard heat pumps lose capacity as it gets colder, but cold-climate ("hyper-heat") models are built to keep producing heat well below 0°F. If a mini-split will be a primary heat source, the model's low-temperature capacity matters as much as its size — we'll walk you through that during your free consultation.

We also recommend mounting outdoor units on a stand or wall bracket above typical snow depth, so defrost water can drain away and drifting snow can't block the coil.

Sizing: getting it right

Mini-splits are sized in BTUs, commonly 9,000, 12,000, 18,000, and 24,000. Square footage is only a starting point — ceiling height, insulation, windows, sun exposure, and whether the room is on the top floor all change the answer. Our mini-split sizing guide for NEPA homes explains the rule of thumb and when to size up.

Single-zone vs. multi-zone

A single-zone system pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor unit — ideal for one room or an open area. A multi-zone system runs two or more indoor units off one outdoor unit, which saves space outside but ties every zone to a single compressor. For some homes, two single-zone systems are the better choice. We'll tell you which fits your layout.

"I recently used Affordable AC to replace an old split unit. I couldn't be more pleased! Josh responded promptly whenever I texted a question, did the work efficiently, and gave me a very fair price."

Mini-split repair and maintenance

We repair mini-splits that aren't heating or cooling, show blinking error codes, drip water from the indoor unit, ice up outside without defrosting, smell musty, or make fan noise.

To keep one running well, rinse the washable filters every few weeks during heavy use and have the indoor coil and blower wheel professionally cleaned periodically. Dirt and mold buildup in the blower wheel is one of the most common causes of weak airflow and odors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a ductless mini-split heat my home in a Pennsylvania winter?

Yes, if you choose a cold-climate model sized for your space. Northeast PA is in IECC climate zone 5A, and cold-climate mini-splits are designed to keep heating well below 0°F. Many local homes use them alongside an existing boiler or furnace.

What size mini-split do I need for one room?

As a rough starting point, rooms up to about 300 sq ft usually need around 9,000 BTU and rooms of 300–450 sq ft around 12,000 BTU — more for top-floor, sunny, or poorly insulated rooms. See our mini-split sizing guide for details.

How long does a mini-split installation take?

Many single-zone installations are completed in about a day; multi-zone systems take longer depending on line-set runs and mounting. We'll give you a realistic timeline up front.

Do mini-splits need maintenance?

Yes. Clean the washable filters every few weeks during heavy use, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and debris, and have the indoor coil and blower wheel professionally cleaned periodically.

Can I add air conditioning to a house with boiler heat?

Yes — a ductless mini-split is usually the simplest way. It needs no ductwork, only a small opening in the wall for the line set, and it provides efficient heat as well as cooling.

Can you install a mini-split I bought online?

Yes. We install customer-supplied ductless mini-splits, including cold-climate models. Send us the model number before you order so we can confirm the size, the electrical needs, and what's included in the box, such as the line set, wall bracket, and disconnect.
